Vision:
The Science Park represents a dynamic interface between the University of Alexandria and the local industry to convert academic innovations into commercial reality through effective knowledge and technology transfer. It should contribute eventually to the promotion and diversification of the local economic growth in Alexandria, its vicinity and Egypt and to bring high skill pharmacy related jobs into Alexandria by fostering knowledge-based pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies.
Mission statement:
• Support of the diverse fields of pharmaceutical
industry by conducting and incubating applied research for
the production of new drugs and new dosage forms including
drugs based on natural products used in the complementary
and alternative medicine.
• Mentoring newly emerging companies during the difficult
early phase of their development
• Development and enhancement of Egyptian raw materials
serving the drug industry
• Enforcement of the potentials of Egyptian pharmaceutical
products to compete in the international markets.
• Provision of highly specialized training, technical
support and advice to support knowledge-based businesses to
assist in the growth of health-care based companies.
Administration of the Science
Park:
The Science Park at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of
Alexandria is administered by a board of top officials of the
administration of the University of Alexandria, the Faculty of
Pharmacy, and the Drug Industry:
1- President of the University of Alexandria (President)
2- Vice President of the University of Alexandria for Community
Services Affairs and Environment Development (Vice-president)
3- Dr Hassan Abbas Helmy, Chairman of Pharco Pharmaceuticals
(Vice president)
4- The Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy (Member)
5- The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (Member)
6- The Vice Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy for Community
Services Affairs and Environment Development (Executive Manager)

Infrastructure
The Science Park for Pharmaceutical Research occupies a
relatively large area of the second floor of the new Faculty
building. It includes four main research incubator units:
1. Pharmacological Screening and In vivo research
2. Biotechnology
3. Pharmaceutical technology and Quality Control
4. Chemical and Phytopharmaceutical Research
Researchers of the Science Park have access to modern equipment
and up-to-date information resources.
Current activities:
Training activities
• Continuing professional development of the senior and junior
staff of health care-based institutions and businesses,
including Faculties of Pharmacy, drug companies, hospitals,
blood banks, students
• Specialized training courses and workshops on drug product
stability, bioequivalence testing, HPLC, Drug supply management,
clinical pharmacy, pharmacy practice..
Educational activities
Lectures and seminars in health care related areas
Research and development activities
New trends in pharmaceutical research such as modern drug
delivery systems (e.g. liposomes, microspheres), pharmaceutical
biotechnology, pharmaceutical nanotechnology and tissue
engineering in collaboration with the Tissue Engineering Centre
at the faculty of Dentistry, University of Alexandria,
Bioequivalence studies
Bioequivalence studies are essential for the registration of new
drug products for the Egyptian market and for drug products
exportation. These studies are carried out in the
pharmacological screening and In vivo research unit according to
international guidelines by a team of specialists.
Future activities
Long term joint projects with the Drug industry, joint
supervision of theses having industrial applications goals,
joint projects with the Academy of Sciences and technology,
cooperation with the National Research Center, Marketing of
research, facilitating patentees
Central Lab
A well equipped central laboratory has been established with the
help of the Ministry of International Cooperation. At present,
the Central Lab is headed by Prof. Nazek El-Gindy, Professor of
Industrial Pharmacy. The central Lab holdings cover a wide array
of apparatuses necessary for drug analysis, bioanalysis and
quality control

The Pharmaceutical and
General Services Unit (PGSU)
The Pharmaceutical and General
Services Unit (PGSU), formerly the Pharmaceutical services Unit
(PSU) is a special unit that has been established to provide
general and community services and to carry out short
bioequivalence studies for research and marketing purposes. It
also performs Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) of selected
drugs such as phenytoin upon request from hospitals and clinics.
The PGSU executes short term research projects and analysis of
various materials such as drugs, water, contaminants, upon
request from educational and industrial institutions.
Pharmaceutical
Periodical
“The Alexandria Journal of
Pharmaceutical Sciences”, is issued biannually. A large
number of research articles in different pharmacy disciplines
have been published over the years. The Alexandria Journal of
Pharmaceutical Sciences is indexed by the International
Pharmaceutical Abstracts (IPA)
