Research Interests:

  • Cardiovascular neurobiology and hemodynamics that pertain to peripheral and central mechanisms involved in arterial pressure regulation. More specifically, the interactions of alcohol (ethanol) or immunosuppressant drugs with circulatory and renal controlling mechanisms and antihypertensive medications and the gender specificity of these effects. Integrative, cellular, and molecular mechanisms involved in the hemodynamic effects of alcohol and its deleterious interactions with arterial baroreflexes and antihypertensive medications including phosphatidylcholine-phosphlipase C, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), nitric oxide synthases, and immediate early genes (transcription regulating factors).

  • Signaling pathways involved in the modulation by vascular endothelium of vascular tone and pre- and post-synaptic regulatory mechanisms of neurotransmission at vascular and non-vascular sites.

Methodologies and techniques:
• Invasive and non-invasive methods for measurement of arterial pressure in conscious animals: direct vascular cannulation, tail cuff technique, and radiotelemetry.
• Thermodilution technique for measurement of cardiac output and its derivatives (stroke volume and vascular resistance).
• Microdialysis of body fluids (e.g. blood, cerebrospinal fluid).
• Stereotaxic techniques for central drug microinjection.
• Receptor autoradiographic binding studies.
• In-vivo electrochemistry for measurment of levels of monoamines in specific brain areas.
• In-situ hybridization and gene expression.
• Surgical deafferentation of arterial baroreceptors.
• Electrical nerve stimulation (aortic depressor, vagal, etc).
• Electrical-field stimulation (neurotrasmitter release studies).
